Fish Finders & Chartplotters — Find Fish Faster While Fishing Smarter

A fish finder changes everything about how you fish. Instead of guessing where fish are holding, you see the bottom, the structure, and the fish themselves — in real time. Whether you're chasing walleye on Lake Erie's western basin, targeting bass on a reservoir, or exploring a remote stretch of river from your inflatable kayak, the right fish finder turns productive water into a repeatable system.

At Can't Stop Kayaking, we carry fish finders built for kayaks, inflatable boats, and small watercrafts — compact enough for a cockpit, powerful enough to perform.

Fish Finder vs. Chartplotter — What's the Difference?

You'll see both terms used when shopping for marine electronics. A fish finder uses sonar to show depth, underwater structure, and fish. A chartplotter uses GPS to navigate and mark waypoints. Modern combo units — like everything we carry — do both in a single display. For kayak and small boat anglers, a combo is almost always the right choice. You get the full picture: see the fish and navigate back to the exact spot where you found them.

What to Look for in a Kayak Fish Finder

Here's what matters most when you're shopping for a kayak, small boat or an inflatable boat setup.

Screen size: 5" works with tight cockpits; 7" is the sweet spot for most kayak anglers — readable at a glance without dominating your setup. 9" and larger are great on bigger inflatable fishing boats with more deck space.

Sonar type: Basic CHIRP (Compressed High-Intensity Radiated Puluse) handles depth and cleaner fish arches and more readable sonar picture.  DownScan (DSI) gives you detailed imagery of what's directly below and will show you what it actually looks like.  SideScan shows structure to your left and right. Its like looking out both windows at the same time! On a kayak it helps cover more ground. — a major upgrade for covering water quickly. Live sonar (like Lowrance ActiveTarget) shows fish reacting to your bait in real time. The ActiveTarget from Lowrance is like watching an underwater camera feed. Fish move in real time.

GPS & mapping: Look for preloaded inland charts that cover your specific fisheries. C-MAP charts with accurate bathymetry (depth contours) are essential for trolling and structure fishing.

Transducer mounting: On kayaks, suction cup mounts work well on most hull types. Scupper mounts route cleanly through existing holes on sit-on-top kayaks. On inflatable boats and SUPs, suction cup or inside-hull mounting are your best options.

The HDS PRO is Lowrance's flagship — built for tournament anglers, serious walleye hunters, and anyone who wants complete underwater intelligence rather than just basic sonar.

The HDS PRO doesn't just show you fish. It gives you real-time baitfish movement, individual gamefish identification, photographic bottom detail, and full system integration so you can control your trolling motor, sonar, and boat systems from a single display. The latest C-MAP® charts provide precise bathymetry and navigational data that put you on productive water before your first cast.

Lowrance Elite FS — Professional Features at an Accessible Price

The Elite FS is where serious anglers get tournament-level technology without the price tag. The standout feature is ActiveTarget™ Live Sonar — real-time underwater viewing that shows you exactly what fish are doing as it happens. Watch bass chase a lure. See crappie suspended in a brush pile. Observe fish behavior live, not as a sonar echo after the fact.

Combined with Active Imaging™ — which merges CHIRP sonar, SideScan, and DownScan into photo-like underwater images — and preloaded C-MAP Contour+ charts, the Elite FS gives you a complete fish-finding system that covers locating water, identifying structure, and watching fish react, all in one unit.

Best for: Those who want to kick it up a notch, serious anglers who want live sonar capability, Lake structure fishing, and anglers who plan to grow their electronics setup over time.

Available units:

Lowrance Eagle — Legendary Sonar, Zero Learning Curve

The Eagle series brings Lowrance's proven sonar DNA into the most approachable package they've ever made. If you've been hesitant about marine electronics — intimidated by complex menus or overwhelmed by too many settings — Eagle is the answer.

Revolutionary autotuning technology continuously optimizes sonar settings for conditions automatically. Detailed C-MAP charting guides you to productive water on any lake or river. And the intuitive interface means you can turn it on and start fishing immediately, with no setup procedure or technical learning curve required.

Eagle is beginner-friendly without being a beginner product. Experienced anglers who want reliable, accurate performance without dealing with complex systems choose Eagle too.

Pair Your Fish Finder With the Right Setup

A fish finder is most effective as part of a complete rig. Here's what we suggest would  pair well:

The most effective kayak fishing upgrade you can make is a fish finder combined with a trolling motor. The finder shows you where fish are; the motor holds you in position while you work them.
